2018 Decor Trends

There’s nothing like the month of January to kick start new beginnings. The start of a new year brings new energy, full of potential and ambition. We go about making little changes that result in big improvements in our lifestyles – getting more physical activity on a daily basis, picking up the phone to call a distant family member, or plotting out the family schedule on a giant wall calendar. When it comes to our homes, January definitely gives us the urge to continue with the improvements trend – because as with many resolutions, a few small upgrades here can pay dividends.

Get inspired by the latest décor trends of the year, and then revitalize your interior design style until it’s as fresh and inspiring as the New Year itself.

Hot Shades of the Year

Pantone has declared its Colour of the Year 2018, and it’s a rich and regal one: Ultra Violet! Benjamin Moore has also announced its favourite colour for the year: Caliente. These two bold, spicy colours have a lot in common.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” says Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

We love this design-forward and uber-modern approach. Draw inspiration from all that’s to come in 2018 and explore progressive shades of purple. Purple is, after all, known to be a colour associated with creativity, wisdom, dignity, mystery, and magic.

Red is another powerful colour to embrace in 2018. “Caliente is the signature colour of a modern architectural masterpiece; a lush carpet rolled out for a grand arrival; the assured backdrop for a book-lined library; a powerful first impression on a glossy front door,” says Ellen O'Neill of Benjamin Moore. “The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes. Harness the vitality.”

Brass Accents

From finishes and furniture to light fixtures and accessories, brass accents bring a warm, subtle and chic vibe to any room. The mixed metals trend is also going strong, so try mixing in other metallic hues with the brass for a unique and edgy look.

Natural Materials

Besides brass, several types of natural stone are also trending this year, including marble, onyx, agate and alabaster. Other earthy accents are in, too – think wood, concrete and leather. Incorporating natural materials into your interior design is a beautiful way to add texture, depth and visual interest as well as a subtle sense of calm, clarity and peacefulness. Natural elements bring a fresh, modern pop to your home while at the same time being completely timeless.

Wall Art

Does your home have a picture wall? The concept is simple: cover one wall in your home (preferably one that you’ll see often, such as in the bedroom or family room) with photos and/or art. And we do mean cover! A full wall is visually inviting and exciting. It will never cease to inspire and to lift you up, while also being a great conversation piece for guests. According to Elle Décor, pins for “wall art” went up 637% this year. So start selecting your favourite prints and frames, and create your own stylish wall art.

Classic B&W

Bold jewel tones are great, but the classic combination of black and white never goes out of style. In fact, it’s everywhere this year, from artwork to dishes to bedding.
