5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Long Weekend

We’re coming up to the August long weekend – which is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some quality time with the family. Here’s some great ways to make the most of the upcoming long weekend.

Go Gadget-Free For a Weekend

Let’s admit it - we’re all hooked on technology and that often includes the kids! Whether it’s our cell phones, tablet, video games, computer or television, we spend a lot of time connected to these devices. Why not try ditching the technology for a weekend? It might be a bit of a challenge and the kids might drag their heels a little bit – but it’ll be well worth the family time you’ll get and the memories you’ll make!

Sleep Under the Stars

Spend the weekend or even just one night bonding with nature. Pack up the family, pitch a tent and tell ghost stories while sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows. If a weekend getaway to a campground isn't possible, have your own family camping night in the backyard. If a campfire is not an option, you can grill hot dogs and tell spooky stories by the glow of a flashlight or portable lantern. It's amazing how your own yard can be transformed into a nature wonderland at night. The kids will love it!

Take a Hike

Spend some time outdoors this coming weekend and get some exercise. Take the family on a nature hike or stroll along your favourite path or trail – or try exploring somewhere new!  For added fun and learning, read up on the different flowers, trees, and birds in your area and have fun spotting and photographing the various ones you come across.

Take a Staycation

No time to get away this weekend? No problem! Spend some time out of the house taking in a movie, attending a sporting event, challenging the family to some bowling or mini golf, or visiting the local museum, science centre or zoo. The time spent away together will take your mind off of the household chores and give you all a chance to enjoy the weekend away from your day-to-day routine.

Have a Themed Backyard Party

Throwing a themed backyard party is a great way to enjoy the warm weather with friends and family over the long weekend. The kids will get a kick out of choosing a theme and having food and décor to suit it! If you choose Mexican, you can serve BBQ quesadillas, chips and guacamole and frozen drinks!
