With the cooler temperatures upon us, it’s natural to want to spruce up some of your home’s décor to match the season. Fall conjures thoughts of colourful leaves swirling in the brisk air, cozy evenings in front of the fire with loved ones and a hot cocoa, and the delicious aromas of the harvest, with squash, pumpkins, apples and more all available locally in abundance. Embrace the spirit of the season by bringing colour, warmth and comfort to your home with these easy tips.

Pops of Colour
Add drama and warmth to your home by incorporating some of the rich reds, oranges and yellows of autumn. Mixed metals also look great in the fall. Colour can easily be added with bouquets of fresh flowers, slip covers for furniture or pillows, or artwork created by your kids and displayed on the wall. Get creative and bring the colours of the season into your décor.

High Contrast
Need a bigger lift to brighten your space? Try painting a wall in a dark colour (or a bold print) and then incorporating bright pops of colour with your furniture and artwork. Or, paint a wall in a vibrant hue to give your home a distinct stylishness. High contrast looks are a huge fall trend.

Shape and Textures

Elevate neutrals by incorporating unique shapes and textures. Chunky knits are a popular fall trend, as are natural materials such as raffia and versatile soft faux-fur or plaid throws. We’re loving the trend of outdoor fabrics being used indoors, and fabric wall art. Marble accents are also very popular this fall, as are chic matte finishes.

Nooks and Vignettes
Create pleasing nooks and little spotlights in your home by arranging figurines, ornaments or mementos that invoke the season and bring you joy when you look at them. Follow these simple rules on making beautiful vignettes. This also works well for collections. Create a streamlined look by placing similar objects on a tray or platter.

Vintage Accessories
Keep your eye open at farmers’ markets and yard sales for inexpensive and novel vintage items, such as baskets, rugs or lamps. Layering rugs is a trend this season, and can create a warm and unique look. Or add a dramatic touch with a vintage chandelier or a mirror in a stylish frame.
