The Village Design Charrette a Success!

Successful process aids design - Partners looking at designs for next building phase of The Village

It's been 15 years since the much-talked about design charrette was first held to create the architecturallyprotected
New Urban community in Niagara-on-the-Lake known as The Village.

Last week, a three-day design marathon modeled after that first workshop was held to aid in developing the next
stage of development, the eight-acre portion that lies east of the current building underway on Niagara Stone
Road, closer to Two Mile Creek and the ravine.

The original 1996 charrette was a week-long planning process unlike anything else that has occurred in NOTL.
It involved hundreds of residents, politicians and business people, and was led by world-renowned town planner
Andres Duany.

The next stage of the signature community, considered one village and one vision, is co-owned by Brookfield
Homes and Traditional Neighbourhood Developments.

The design drawings were hurriedly being pinned up as residents arrived to view them last Wednesday, after an
intensive effort by an all-star team of three renowned architects who toured the Old Town and the first phases of
The Village, and then went to work incorporating what is best about those designs.

Adam Hawley of TND says this next phase of homes, which includes about 50 to 60 units, mostly single family
homes with some townhomes and semis, hasn't changed substantially from the original plans. The home designs incorporate all that has been successful in the earlier phases, he said, but lots are laid out around a beautiful park in the centre of the property, and will also take advantage of the views of Jackson Triggs winery and the vineyards across the road.
